Zanzibar, French Bureau
This cover of the French Post Office of July 26, 1897 from Zanzibar is franked with a 25cents/2.5 annas of the emergency issue. In July 1897 stamps of 25c/2.5 annas to pay simple letter rate were not available and the French Consulate decided to surcharge a new value of unemployed stamps. To obtain the largest number of stamps from the sheets, the surcharges (470) were made even on the margins and borders and corners. The item here is one of the very scarce commercial usages known, franked with an emergency stamp overprinted on the 1/2 anna sheet's corner!
