Principality of Monaco

S.A.S. le Prince de Monaco

Monaco

Between 1851 and 1857 covers from the Principality franked with the then available Sardinian stamps are very rare because the Prince opposed the use of vignettes with the portrait of the King of Sardinia in view of the sovereignty of the Principality. This cover of 1853 is in fact the only known with the first issue of Sardinia from the Monaco office. It can be regarded as the top gem of postal history items of Monaco.

Mauritius One Penny "Ball Cover"

The Mauritius "Post Office" stamps, probably the most famous and by group certainly the most valuable in all philately were issued in 1847. Legend has it that the One Penny was initiated for the first purpose of franking invitation envelopes to a famous masked ball organised by the Governor and especially his wife Lady Gomm. Only three "Ball Invitation Envelopes" survive today, each bearing a One Penny stamp cancelled on its first recorded day of issue September 21, 1847. This is one of those envelopes bearing the One Penny Post Office which was engraved by Mr. Barnard, a watchmaker of Port Louis, on a small copper plate with the two values (1d and 2d) together. A world class rarity.

Rumania

The first stamps issued for Rumania were the famous Moldavian "Bulls" issued in very limited numbers and very few surviving today. This locally used registered cover bears four of the "Bulls" cut round and neatly tied by Bakeu cds's. The four stamps carry the values of three of the four issued stamps - the 27p, 81p and 108p (2). The 81 paras is noted as one of Europe's rarest stamps and this is a unique usage of the stamp on cover.

Canada

The Royal William was the first steamship to sail the Atlantic in 1833. The Canadian Post Minister ordered a commemoration of this event by issuing a postage stamp for the centenary. The first vignette presented however another Royal William built in 1837 in the USA. It was refused and replaced by a new vignette with the correct design. This essay of the first vignette has therefore become a rare and important piece in Canadian Postal History.
